Spider's Bite

Kermit was furious. He didn't even have a chance to show Kelly and Jody the report before Caine was arrested. He drove around for fifteen minutes just trying to clear his head so he could be able to talk to Captain Simms with a civil tongue in his head. He even called Mary Margaret on his cell phone and told her what had happened. She agreed to go down to the precinct and see what she could do.
"Before you do that call Stacy Pardcek. I have a feeling she should be present when Caine is questioned."
"Sure, no problem. I'll give her a call right away. I'll also see if I can talk some sense into Kelly. I saw that report too. It just can't be Peter who is doing this. It's like that time he had been accused of Rebecca Calvert's murder."
"Oh yeah, only this time, the bad guys might win."
"Don't say that Kermit. We've got to believe we'll win this. I'm on your side, remember?"
"Thanks sweet cakes. I'll see you at the precinct."
It was just as he hung up the phone when he saw a struggling Peter walking on the opposite side of the road. He quickly spun his car into a U-turn and getting ahead of the young Shaolin priest, he stopped his car and jumped out.
"Peter! Peter!"
At first Peter didn't answer and when Kermit got closer it was then that Peter recognized him.
"Kermit, am I glad to see you."
Kermit caught Peter as he collapsed into his arms and into unconsciousness.
"Damn, what did they do to you kid?" It was then that Kermit noticed the needle marks all over Peter's arms. "I better get you to the Ancient's. I just hope he's back by now because your father's in deep trouble."
Kermit strapped Peter into the passenger seat then jumped into the driver side and revved the engine. He should have taken Peter to a hospital or even to the precinct, but Peter was in no condition to talk to anyone. It was then that Kermit changed his mind then headed to his own apartment. Peter would be far safer there. Kelly will probably have both the Ancient and Caine's place staked out soon.
He then called Skalany's number a second time.
"Hey it's me. Got another assignment for you. Go get the Ancient and bring him to my place. He should be back by now from wherever he's gone to. I can't explain. Just get him."
"I take it you found our friend and he needs help?"
Kermit took her words to mean that she was not alone and did not want the other person to know whom they were referring to.
"Oh yeah, and he's in pretty bad shape."
"I'll be there when I can."
Kermit heard the phone on the other line click and continued on his path.
Another fifteen minutes found Kermit struggling with a semi-conscious Peter from his car and to the elevator leading up to his apartment. He was grateful that he had gotten a private entrance, all the more secure and away from the prying eyes of neighbors.
As the elevator door opened onto his private floor, he dug his keys from his pocket and hit a button on his key-fob. He could hear the lock on the door open as well as the beep that let him know the alarm had been deactivated. Since the last time he had a guest, he made certain that anyone entering his home was going to be safe. He didn't want a repeat performance.
As soon as he was inside, he made certain that the door was secure behind him and the alarm was activated. He then carried Peter into the bedroom and sat him in a nearby chair. After turning down the covers, he guided Peter over to the bed and got him comfortable.
"Just remember kid, I don't let just anyone sleep in my bed. You're not my usual partner or my type. But I'm making an exception for now."
Kermit pulled the covers up and placed a hand on Peter's forehead. His body burned with fever, trying to throw off the drugs that still fought for control in his system.
"I'm going to call the Captain, see if I can't stop this manhunt that Kelly's instigated. You, Caine, and whoever else is involved know the truth. It's about time someone pays attention to it. Don't go anywhere."
The last statement was a moot point since Peter Caine was deep in slumber.
