Caine and Kermit headed to the beginnings of the residential area of Chinatown and entered the home of the Ancient through the garden. There was no one to be found. Even Cheryl wasn't about.
"That is odd. He is not here."
"What do you mean he's not here? He was here a several hours ago. You were with him when I left."
"Cheryl was also here when I was summoned away."
"Wait a minute," Kermit stated. "You don't suppose that had been a diversion, I mean to get you out of the way? You think the Black Widow Order took them?"
"No. The Ancient had been poisoned and could not interfere. The Order would not have taken him, unless we are getting too close."
At that moment, Kermit spotted the open book of Shambhala sitting on a stand. "Caine, I think I know where they've gone."
"Ah, you are right. Lo Si must have asked Cheryl to accompany him. They will be safe from the Order and the masters will heal the Ancient there."
"What should we do with the book? Someone could take it."
Caine considered Kermit's words. He moved the book to a nearby corner of the room where a bookshelf crammed with other books stood. "It will be less noticed if it is here. The book should remain open so they may return."
Just as Kermit and Caine were considering their next move, Jody Powell and Kelly Blake came into the room.
Kelly Blake immediately laid into Caine with all of her anger. "Okay Caine, where's that bastard son of yours hiding? And don't try to protect him. You do and I'll have you hauled in for interfering in police business. Now where is he, the back stabbing murderer."
Caine turned toward Kermit, his eyes narrowing at the accusations that Kelly Blake was throwing at him about Peter.
"I do not know where my son is," Caine stated coldly.
"That's a lie. You're protecting him. I'm warning you. If you're hiding him, you'll go down as an accessory to murder."
"I do not lie. My son and father were kidnapped by the Order of the Black Widow. Kermit is helping me find them."
"Order of the Black Widow!?!" Kelly raved. "Kermit do you believe this nonsense? Come on Caine. I'm arresting you on the charge of obstructing justice and interfering in police business."
"You can't do that," Kermit stated. "Jody, do something. You know Caine. He always tells the truth. Peter has been kidnapped by the Order."
Jody didn't say another word. She was no longer able to sort out the truth. She wanted to believe that her old partner wasn't a murderer, but what she saw earlier gave her no choice but to follow Kelly's lead. Jody had not said a word, but knew if she had to go to court, she would have no choice but to reveal what she knew. And what she knew would damn Peter Caine to the electric chair. She just wasn't ready to do it. Hearing Caine and Kermit's words, there just had to be another explanation.
"Kermit do not interfere. I will go with them."
"Turn around," Kelly ordered and pulled out a set of handcuffs.
"Is that necessary?" Kermit stated as he watched Caine being handcuffed and the pain in his face showed that Kelly wasn't being all that gentle.
Then Kelly started reading Caine his rights. "You have the right to remain silent . . . "
"You have no right to treat him like a criminal. He was going with you willingly."
"Shut up Kermit or I'll arrest you, too."
Kermit bit his tongue. 'We'll just see about this. We'll see whose telling the truth.'
Jody turned toward Kermit as Kelly led Caine away. The pain in her eyes was very apparent. It was obvious while Kermit had been helping Caine to find Peter and Matthew, something else had been going on to complicate matters and muddy the waters. Peter? Accused of murder? It just wasn't true. It would seem the cop's hands were once again tied. It was time for mercenary rules, but not before he confronted a certain police captain.
