Kermit went to the city morgue and knocked on Nicky Elder's office.
"Come in." Nicky's muffled voice called out. He was in the middle of having lunch and had a mouth full of a roast beef sandwich. "Hey Kermit, what can I do for you?"
"I've got something I need you to take a look at."
Kermit handed Nicky the plastic bag containing the syringe.
Nickly glanced at it briefly then said, "So, it's just your typical syringe used by your typical drug addict."
"It's not the syringe I want you to look at, it's what might be on it and what's inside."
"Kermit, I work on cadavers. That's not my specialty. Send to over to the lab."
Kermit leaned over Nicky and in a menacing tone declared, "I want you to look into it. This involves a mutual friend of ours. Plus, I don't want anyone else to know about it."
"Who's the mutual friend?"
"I think you know."
"This mutual friend wouldn't happen to be a former cop turned Shaolin priest now would it?"
"Oh yeah."
"I'll get on it right away," Nicky said taking the plastic bag in hand. "How soon do you need it?"
"Can you have the results in an hour?"
"I can probably have them for you in two. I'm going to have to clear some things first before I can get the equipment I'm going to need."
"I'll hold you to that. I want that report in my hands in two hours. I'll be in my office."
"You want me to give it to Captain Simms to see?"
"Just hand it to me. I'll take care of Simms."
Kermit was as good as his word. He returned to his office, slipping in unnoticed. He pulled the blinds shut to prevent anyone from seeing him and began feverishly working at his computer. Within half an hour he was printing out reports related to the Shatner case, finding that there were at least ten associates who had reasons to murder the guy; five who lived right in the city. He placed the printouts in a folder to hand off to Strenlich later then began working on the next case. It didn't take long for that one to be completed, just barely ten minutes. He worked on two more and was finishing up a fifth when Nicky walked in his office.
"Did anyone see you?"
"Chen did, but I already had something for him so I handed it off to him first before I came to see you."
"Did he see you enter this office?" Kermit asked being more specific.
"I don't think so."
"What have you got?"
Nicky handed him the folder. Kermit opened and scrutinized the contents. A satisfied grin spread across his face as he read what he was looking for.
"Perfect."
He snapped the folder shut then grabbed his coat once again exiting down the back stairs and heading back to Chinatown.
