Kermit turned toward Caine and removed his trademark sunglasses. It wasn't often that he did that, but under the circumstances he wanted to face Caine without the shield of green.
"When?"
"It had not been long. Perhaps an hour ago."
"Any demands?" Kermit asked, remembering the last time they had dealt with the sect in France.
"No, there has not been enough time."
"What about your connection to Peter, can't you sense him?" Kermit asked.
"Normally, but the sect has drugged him of that I am certain."
"What about your father?"
"I . . . do not," Caine hesitated, uncertain how to tell but knowing that Kermit had to know. "My father and I do not have the same connection as I do with Peter."
"That's understandable. You've been apart from your father far longer than with Peter. You haven't had the time to develop that kind of connection. You're just starting to get to know each other again. Give it time."
Caine shrugged his shoulder, "I do not know if we will get that chance."
Kermit rose and opened one of the drawers in the desk sitting off to the side. He pulled out another trademark, his Dessert Eagle. Quietly he holstered the gun and proceeded to pull on his jacket. "Well, we'll just have to make certain you do. We'll begin by going to your place, see if there are any clues."
"What about Captain Simms? Will she not be angry from another "disappearance?"
"To hell with Simms," Kermit said quietly, but spoke his next words more loudly. "I made a promise and I intend to keep it. We'll take the back stairs. It's quicker to the parking lot."
Both men left Kermit's office but before they made their way down the back stairs, Kermit pulled the chief aside.
"Chief, cover me with Captain Simms. There's trouble at the Caine place."
"What kind of trouble? Are you going to need back up? Maybe I should send Jody or Scalany over. You've got a lot of work that needs catching up on."
Kermit looked around the bullpen, assessing who might be the best person for the job, his eyes falling on only one other cop and not fully hearing Chief's Strenlich suggestion.
"I'll let you know. Right now I'm just going over to investigate. It maybe nothing."
"Simms wants those files on the Shatner case. The DA is breathing down all of our necks and if she doesn't have them by morning, they'll be hell to pay. I think you should stay here."
Kermit bristled at the mention of the District Attorney and realizing what the Chief was trying to tell him. "The man's a pompous ass. He's worse that T.J.'s father."
"Hey I heard that," T.J. spouted back from the background.
"No offence," Kermit growled back, his bearded face making him look like Grizzly Adams.
"Kermit, I really mean it this time. The last few months you've been late getting whatever evidence you're supposed to be gathering. We're all behind in our cases as it is."
"Chief, I'll get those files, but if something's going on at the Caines, you know I can't let that go by. I made a promise to an old friend."
Both men knew what "old friend" Kermit referred to and looked over at Caine as if seeing the man for the first time. The look in Caine's eyes said enough. "All right Detective, but you better report in as soon as you find out anything. Against my better judgement, if anything is going on, you're the primary. I'll inform Simms."
"Hold off on telling Simms right now unless there's hard evidence," Kermit replied. "No sense in getting the precinct in an uproar over something that might be trivial."
"Kermit, you know I can't do that. Simms will have my butt in a sling if this continues." But both men knew that if something was going on at the Caine's, it certainly wasn't trivial and Kermit had to be the one to check it out.
Kermit didn't wait to hear the rest. He and Caine were swiftly making their way down the back stairs and out the door. He knew Strenlich would back him up.
"I hope she's in a better mood when I do. She's not going to like this," Strenlich said to no one in particular as he watched the two men leave.
