Soulmates Beyond Time
Part 20
by Alisa Joaquin

Peter stepped into the egg-shaped chamber and discovered it was larger than it appeared. The chamber's configuration appeared to be connected to part of the room that contained the tarantulas. Inside was a large canopy bed, a dresser with an oval mirror, and a table containing several items to drink. Jordan was lying on the bed, waiting. Peter tried not to focus on what Jordan wanted. Instead, he tried to focus on the bottle that he carried and its contents. He kept his thoughts private so his father would not know what he was planning. He did hope his father would understand and he hoped Jordan's soul would be freed.

"Come closer and remove that bulky clothing. Come on Peter, you were never shy when it came to being intimate."

Peter took a deep breath and began removing his jacket. He spoke not a word, waiting for the right moment. He dropped his jacket on a nearby chair and came closer to Jordan.

"I have a better idea. Why don't we just talk for a while."

"Oh, Peter. Talking had never really been your strong suit. What's the matter. Don't I appeal to you any more?"

Jordan had stripped down to her barest essentials, trying her best to be as seductive as possible. Peter looked at her and felt nothing. The woman that he once cared for was no longer the same. This one was a cheap imitation. The clothes she wore, or lack thereof, reminded him of the many hookers that had been brought into the precinct. Even now, Peter could not even begin to feel anything like arousal. Any feeling he had for Jordan left when his father's life had been threatened a second time. Hope of helping her had been removed. The best way he could help her was to destroy the thing that she had become. Peter came closer, then turned.

"Why don't we have a drink, first?"

"You're stalling."

"Only for time." Peter tried to joke.

"Why not. Maybe it will loosen up that cold shoulder I'm getting from you."

"I'll get it. You just stay there." Peter turned and looked around. The drinks that he saw did not appeal to him, but he had no choice. Since Peter took the brands, his taste in alcohol had been diminished and he was drinking primarily tea. Then Peter spotted what looked like a pitcher of water. Good, at least there's something I can have that won't effect my mind, he thought. He started to reach for it when . . .

"I would not drink that if I were you."

"Why, it's just water, isn't it?"

"Looks can be deceiving. Drop that flower into it."

Peter picked up the flower and did what Jordan instructed. The flower began to bubble.

"If you drank that, you would not be able to grant me my "request," she continued. "Pour some of that wine. It will be far better for you."

"What's that pitcher for?"

"That does not concern you. Your focus should be on me. Pour the wine and come over here."

Peter stared at the pitcher one more time, then grabbed the bottle of wine. He poured two glasses. He was about to turn when he remembered the small bottle he carried. He said a silent prayer to the One for forgiveness and added its contents into one of the glasses. He felt the presence of the potion and handed Jordan that glass. Peter watched as she took several sips. He also sipped his wine to avoid suspicion. As Jordan took each sip, her craving grew and soon she drained the glass. Peter watched as the potion began to work its way into Jordan's system.

Suddenly Jordan arched her back and gave out a very high pitched scream. Fear and anger played on her features as she realized what had been done to her. The potion Peter gave her was not poison, but to a spider, it may as well had been. The anti-venom worked its way through Jordan's blood battling for domination. Fury rose up within Jordan at the way she had been tricked. She crouched in the style of the jumping spider and lunged for Peter's throat. Peter quickly backed away avoiding her claw-like nails and ran for the exit. As he re-entered the main room, Peter looked up to see Skalany slumped on the floor. The hypnotic spell that she was under had been broken. While Peter had been busy with Jordan, Caine had freed himself from his bonds and was working on Kermit. Kermit slowly came to and helped Caine cut through the rest of the webbing.

Peter tried to help Skalany up from the floor when Jordan burst through the shell of her chamber. What came through no longer resembled the woman that Peter once thought he loved. The anti-venom and the poison that was Jordan's blood battled within her and distorted her features beyond recognition. At times, Jordan seemed to be fighting herself. Then the creature that Jordan became reasserted itself. Jordan circled her intended prey. The mate she had intended to give her offspring was now her target. Peter was too distracted with Skalany that he did not see the venom that shot out from Jordan's mouth.

"Peter!" Caine shouted to his son. He could not get near him because Kermit needed his help.

Peter turned at the sound of his father's voice, but reacted a little too late. The poison came in contact with his back and burned through his shirt. His skin started to burn as if acid had been thrown on it. Peter tried to ignore the pain and returned his attention back on Jordan. Peter saw only one way to stop the creature that was once his lover. Peter maneuvered over to the wall of glass and kicked hard. The glass shattered, flooding the floor with hundreds of tarantulas. Peter picked up a piece of broken glass and hurled it at Jordan slicing through her right leg. Jordan went down, still screaming her fury. Peter ran back to the other side of the room, grabbed Skalany, and headed for the cobwebbed filled corridor. Caine followed his son, supporting Kermit. Peter hesitated and let his father go first. There was still one more thing that needed doing. Peter steeled himself for the final act and pulled out a lighter that he lifted off of the bartender that lead him through to Jordan's lair. He flicked the lighter on and tossed it into the gathering horde of spiders. He could feel the pain of each spider as it ignited. The pain at having to harm any creature would stay with him for a long time. He knew if he didn't do what was necessary, Jordan's spirit could not be freed. Peter watched for one more moment until Jordan had been nearly surrounded with the burning spiders. For a brief moment, their eyes made contact. Relief and sorrow could be seen in her eyes along with the spider's venom. The battle within Jordan continued to rage. The human spirit that was Jordan struggled to be free. The anti-venom had done as much as it was going to do, freeing Jordan just enough for her to act. Jordan walked out into the middle of the spiders and let the flames engulf her. Peter deeply felt the loss and almost ran to Jordan's body to comfort her. Skalany stirred as the flames forced Peter back along the corridor. Skalany was finally coming to and he needed to get her outside. Chaos and confusion reigned in the rest of the club. Caine had managed to get the help of others and freed those trapped above. Soon the flames from the back of the club were working their way forward. Everyone made it to the street without further incident. Sirens could be heard as the fire and rescue teams made their way to the scene.

"Oh my head feels like someone hit it with a jackhammer. You can let go of me, now Partner."

Peter let Skalany go only to find that he wished he hadn't. Suddenly he was falling toward the pavement and into darkness as the pain and the poison from Jordan took its toll.
