Part 36

It wasn't long after that Kermit found himself outside the ruined temple, his equipment lying next to him by the side of the road. As he headed back to Braniff, his thoughts played back the last conversation that he had with his friend. Before the monks sent him back, Kermit tried to convince Peter one more time.

"Peter, they tried to kill you. They've been robbing you blind for years. What's in those tunnels is a king's fortune. Who knows how much they've taken and how much is still in there. The land still belongs to your family. They've been stealing from you ever since the temple was abandoned, maybe even before."

"That would explain why Vance Cavanaugh wanted to remove us from that temple."

"Well his grandson has been trying to prove it," Kermit continued. "He's got a sample of the ore and we've got proof that the land is still owned by the Caines."

"That still may not be enough," Peter interjected, the cop mode coming out. "You've got to get more evidence than that."

"I know. If I'd found your body, I could have also gotten them for murder. But we just don't know whose behind this."

"There's one person you can check out. He was one of Vance's buddies. His name is Kyle Jameson. He was with Vance when my father and I went to Braniff. You may want to look into his bank account."

"Thanks Peter. A name can really help us a lot. I wish you were coming back. We could use you on this."

"You know I can't, not right now. I will return, when it's time."

"You sounded like your father there for a moment."

"I miss him, Kermit. KC looks so much like him."

"You'd be proud of him, Peter. We'll talk more when you come home."

Kermit was still mulling over the words that he had exchanged with Peter when he found that he had walked clear back to the Lowery farm. He was brought out of his revere when he noticed the Sheriff's car parked in the yard. He walked up to the group that was standing around.

"We do not know where he is."

"We haven't seen Kermit Griffin since yesterday."

"What's going on?" Kermit spoke up after hearing his name.

"Kermit, where have you been?"

"There you are Griffin. I've been trying to get a hold of you since yesterday," the Sheriff stated with some annoyance.

"I've been doing some digging if you want to know," Kermit replied. The specifics he left unclear. "What's up?"

"That woman who attacked Sally, the one that you seem to know so well . . ."

"Yeah, what about her?" Kermit's eyes narrowed thinking the worse; that Xia had escaped right out from under the Sheriff's nose. He wasn't prepared for the Sheriff's next reply.

"She's dead."
