Home of the Ancient

Mary Margaret paced the home of the Ancient.

"You don't know what you've done. How can you send him out there? Peter's not a cop any more. This is a police investigation since the disappearance of that visiting cop from LA. You're in a lot of trouble, Lo Si."

"Calm yourself Mary Margaret. There is someone to see you."

A familiar figure walked down the steps from the rooms upstairs and came into the Ancient's living room. Mary Margaret's eyes became wide and her mouth spread into a huge grin of joy. She practically threw herself into her lover's arms.

"Oh Caine! I've been so worried. Where have you been? Peter said you'd return. Don't ever scare me like that again."

Caine held Mary Margaret as close as he could. He had not realized just how much he also missed her. Not since Laura's death did he allow himself to fully love another. After learning the truth that the photograph the Ancient had given him had been a fake to lure him away from Chinatown, Caine made a pilgrimage back to California to once again say goodbye to his beloved wife and to lay his demons to rest. Once that had been done, he could give his heart freely and fully to Mary Margaret.

"I am sorry that I frightened you. It was not my intention. Are you all right?"

Mary Margaret had to laugh at how Caine always thought of others first. "I'm fine, but what about you? I saw that you were hurt. How is that . . ."

"The monks of Shambhala healed my wounds."

"They were the ones that took you?" Mary Margaret questioned.

"No. Another was responsible," Caine stated, his face becoming stern and serious. "I must go to see him."

"Caine, what's going on?"

"A challenge has been issued. This is for me to answer."

"Caine, I can't let you do this alone. Two men's lives are at stake. First you disappeared, then your cousin, and now Peter. We don't even know who is involved."

"I am aware their disappearances. The Ancient has told me," Caine stated.

"I don't think you realize that with Henry missing this has become a police investigation. I came back here to tell Peter about the lab report on a syringe that we found at the scene of Henry's disappearance."

"What was in the syringe?"

"It was just a sedative," Mary Margaret stated as she showed him the file. "Whatever they want with Henry, they don't want him dead; at least not right away. The police are doing all they can to find them, but we've had no word from the kidnappers. You need to let them do their jobs or you could be in big trouble. I know you and Peter assist sometimes . . . "

"They will not find them that easily," Caine interrupted.

"What? How do you know?" Mary Margaret questioned.

"Bon Bon Hai has them. They may not be a part of this world. And I must answer his challenge if they are to be returned."

"Caine, I don't understand. What do you mean they may not be a part of this world?"

"I will explain later. I must go."

Mary Margaret shook her head and threw up her hands in exasperation.

"Why won't he tell me what's going on?"

"If he had told you, would you have allowed him to leave and to do what is necessary? Lo Si questioned her.

"What's he going to do that I don't know about? Kill Bon Bon Hai?"

Lo Si shrugged his shoulders but did not answer her.

Mary Margaret gave the Ancient a hard stare wondering just what it was that he knew.
