A personal account of the Tai Chi, Qi Gung, & Taoist Meditation Workshop held at the Omega Institute with David Carradine from October 6-8, 2000
Someone asked when David and Arnold Tayam first started working together.
David replied, "When Arnie and I first worked together, oh god it's years now, isn't it, in my backyard. And I was learning the Chen Tai Chi form. And Arnie has this, when it was just the two of us, there's this wonderful rap. I have this thing called a hiatal hernia." At first he did not want us to tell anyone about this. He went on to say, "That I got from this from this real heavy Master," and he said that Arnold had told him that he was loosing something here and that the way to regain it was to find yourself a big tree and hug it." David went on to say not to tell any one about this. And then he realized where we were, and he said, "If this isn't a place full of tree huggers, I don't know what is." (I guess I should have kept this quiet but since I do know those who would be reading this enjoy nature, well I guess it's alright to share it.)
David went on to say, "When you think of something, I mean the idea being that the energy of that tree, that you could bring it in and replace the energy that you have lost as a result of, you know, the dirty blows that society has handed you. And also your own eating habits. What it is, there's a lot of truck drivers that get hiatal hernias because it's caused by yelling while your sitting down. And so blues singers will get that, too. A piano playing blues singer anyway. The thing is looking at this, and I was remembering how just performing, you know, just, I mean, you know that, that healing ball, you know and that pulling down from the heavens, all of that washing away and into the earth. And you think, well this all very symbolic. That's pretty and everything and it makes me feel a little good, but I'm you know, in my backyard doing this, and I'm really serious about learning this and we're going to go out and teach this to lots of people. This is for a video that has been sold to hundreds of thousands of people. So this is a big thing that we're actually doing here. And every ten minutes or so the phone rings or something like that. You remember this? (turning toward Arnold) And I go in and it's Steven Segal who wants me to go to Tibet, something to do with the Dalai Lama. And then another one, fifteen minutes later, something else like that. And I find its, I'm really absolutely believe that it was, you know, and I'm telling you, it's just the two of us, his rap is incredible. The way he's, cause it's some of these things, pull the heavens down and then some kind of metaphor that's more Rob-like that he's doing. He's a little shier when he's talking to this crowd here (referring to Arnold of course), but in my backyard it was different. With the dog getting in the way. And then you go, well the dog is part of it.
"It's like your reading a book and an ant crawls across the page, that ant is actually part of your . . . that's your experience and you do tend to brush them away, maybe kill the ant and everything. But still that's part of your trip. And maybe you should have paid attention to what you were reading when that ant went across, because it may, the cosmos may be telling you something. There's no telling. And the little message that I'm trying to give you here is, is that if you really concentrate on this stuff, that the benefits could be a lot more dynamic than you've dreamed of. Whatever's spreading out like the pebble thrown into the pond. You know those concentric forces that goes out, essentially forever, you know, and gets smaller and smaller the further it gets away, but it's going out there. And since then all kinds of things, and those things resulted, and uh, you know. I find myself stuff that dates from that moment, where somebody calls me up and wants to go to Porta Virata and do a celebrity charity kind of thing to build, put together money to save the coral reefs and the gulf.
"So this is a result of, this all comes from a conversation that I first had while I was learning Tai Chi in my back yard with Arnie. And you know, not only am I having this force that I seen to be able to affect things in a good way that started from this tiny little kernal, But I also get to go to Porta Virata because of a result of it (David grins). You know, and I had to go to Alaska for the whales. And Jamaca, which is a really hot place for the ocean. So, the benefits to me are obvious, but it seems to me like there's a benefit that is just simply, just call it a benefit. I don't want to say it like, I'M BENEFITING THE WHALES and the people out there, starving, and all this kind of thing, but there is a benefit and I am a piece of it. And that piece just seemed to connect to me as a result. I mean it sounds weird, but as a result of making these moves, imagining I had a ball in my hand that kind, I mean isn't that weird? But you got to expect that. You know, I mean, don't NOT expect it in any case. It is definitely a possibility that the results of paying attention to these pages and what's on the board here and whatever you remember to take home with you. The effects of these could be, and I am repeating myself, a lot more dynamic than you imagine. And don't be surprised, and you know, to the extend that you can remember how to do it. Relate a little bit of this to people (and that is exactly what I have been trying to do with writing up these workshops), you know. At your workstations or across the back fence, if you happen to have back fences. In New York City they don't have those do they. No, but uh, anyway that, it just flushed over me while I was looking at this and realizing if you can tell, fuuuuu (making one of the healing sounds in reference to that), maybe it will do something for them."
Then someone said, "I think maybe we need Arnie to come to our backyards."
Arnie's reply was buy the video tape.
A gentleman spoke up in regards to his son who has asthma. He wanted to know if a treatment by Arnie might be any different than what was on the videotapes.
Arnie's reply was, "Actually what it would do is that it would take whatever practice a person would have from the videotape and it's actually augmented further. And the whole idea really in the practice with these Chinese enegetics, really from Chinese medicine model they don't really have things named such as asthma, or bronchitis, and so forth. These are just, kind of like, western terms that the Chinese have put out. When the Chinese look at things, these patterns of disfunction, they look at things such as dampness, dryness, heat. They look in terms of excesses and deficiencies, and so forth. So what happens with medical Chi Gong, there's an aspect of the chi emission that's brought about through a practitioner who does an energic assessment to find imbalances, and that's combined along with the practices. And much of what you see, the basis and the foundation of the Chi Gong videotape. Also acupuncturists and herbalists are familiar but of course they would use needles or herbs or nutrition accordingly."
At this point Arnold noticed that the time was after 10:00 PM. He then stated that we would meet back in the main hall at 9:00 AM for the morning session. We would be going through integrating the spiritual aspect and how that affects our daily living. From there he wished is a goodnight, but then David interrupted and stated there was one change in the program. He was going to share with us 24 questions to a higher awareness. Those he would share with us on Sunday afternoon for a short session. He stated they were from his pet seeker. He said, "You know I always have had a pet seeker, don't you think. You know, there is this little kind of grasshopper in the series, but irritating. The irritating person who comes up and asks you questions and wants to know and, you know what I mean? Tends to be funny looking, acts funny and says funny things and you think he's stupid but he's actually just kind of disconnected, like that kung fu guy you were talking about whose sort of an idiot. But he really got some moves down and everything. He runs my website, and so kind of requests through the website, I get these things, sometimes a questionaire or something like that. You know he says, 'Answer these,' because everybody wants to know your answers to this kind of thing. Most of them are pretty stupid, like, what's your favorite color. I have my answers down here that I sent off to him. I guess some of the questions are stupid but some of the answers are definitely stupid. You know that's my thing of trying to keep it light and be humorous and everything. And I have read a couple to you, but what I thought I would do is, in a light moment tomorrow, I just read all these, there's 24 questions from this little pet seeker of mine. His name is, I can never remember his name, Jay Habakangas, I think I finally got it down. But for a long time I called him Jay Havacupacoffee (big laugh), got it close anyway. (I smiled at this because I knew whom he was talking about since I would chat with him quite frequently in the David Carradine chatroom that had been a part of David's site.) So we'll do that tomorrow, as well as all the rest of this stuff. Well, I hope we do this, again. I should be talking of all this tomorrow, and I will. I just wanted to say that this will happen tomorrow. So everything else I intended to say, I'll say tomorrow."
Then Arnold said, "Thank you for coming, goodnight"
At the end of the evening session, I showed David the photo of my daughter. I introduced her as the next generation of kung fu performers. And David replied, "Oh, have you heard from headquarters?" It sounded like he misunderstood me or was joking. I then showed him the photo and he said, "Beautiful." I then told him about last year and being pregnant and also that my hubby and I actually take Lynne to class with us. He thought that was great.
I then showed the photo to Rob Moses and he was the first person to notice how long she was and said, "She's going to be tall." I also shared with him about her going to class with us and saying, she's probably going to learn it practically the moment she starts walking. And he stated not to push her and it would come naturally. And that is very good advice. We talked a little more and took more pictures. Helen got a photo of David and Rob together.

Add I can't believe it will be all over soon. It's just too short a time.
