A personal account of the Tai Chi, Qi Gung, & Taoist Meditation Workshop held at the Omega Institute with David Carradine from October 6-8, 2000
Rob then went right into another exercise from doing the rollercoaster into doing gyros. He called it GYRO MANTIS (5) and that's the analogy of wheels. He stated that the wheel is the oldest invention in the world next to fire. He said that the wheel is so overlooked in the analogy of martial arts. He stated that everyone wants to say it's this move and it's that move, this is the result, you hit them here or there and really that's bad medicine. Rob then said if you can move like a wheel, you can be completely perpetual and you can create your own gyro physics. How we were doing this was simply spinning our arms around each other. We tilted our arms to get a different feeling of motion. He asked if anyone sat in a swivel chair or turned a bicycle wheel. He then stated that this applied to martial arts, but it's something that is usually overlooked.
Rob then mentioned Jackie Chan and the system of kung fu called Drunken Master. That system is based on gyro physics, but no one ever mentions that. It always has these circles that bring you back into balance and back into play. He said, "You can play it like a drunk, but it's forms of acquiring equilibrium through velocity. Your senses really have to be in tune, so if you loose your balance, you can wobble back into play. By keeping these wheels alive, you can just come right back into balance. It's like learning how to ride a bike. It's getting them going that's hard. Once you get those wheels turning, it's the momentum that keeps you up there. So, let's get those wheels turning and let's go for a bike ride. Just like I was doing the drunken thing. You can alternate your elliptical shapes and you can go back and forth to different patterns. So long as you at least a one two three, before you turn the other way, it will give you the truth of this gyro physics, this equilibrium through velocity. So don't make this blurry. Don't make this just a blurry pattern of wheels. Now also, the thing that is interesting about meditation is that calm rhythm. But life isn't always that way. I like roller coasters and I like fishing trips. I like to cry during soap commercials. Those emotions to me are very very important. So what you want to do with this type of a system is you want to put your heart into it. And as you put your heart into it. These wobbles are loud, and then they'll come up, right, and smaller. They can go extremely wide, right. So you need to play loud. And experiment with different elements of emotion and rhythms and loudness. And your shapes don't always have to be round. Shapes can be elliptical. Take like the cracking of a whip. See you take it through. But the thing is, if you take it around and then through, then you can pull it back around to another roundness. Like taking it up, and then humph, and it naturally unleashes. So if you follow that through to an up point, it's natural timing of gravity that brings you around. That's all a form of gyro sensitivity. Any questions? We'll do a questions and thing later."
At this point he asked David how he was doing on time. David must have confirmed that there was still had some time left. Rob was going take us into the next exercise that he called the EMPTY MANTIS but he didn't. Rob said not to let the Mantis thing throw us. He's just a mantis guy and he wants to be certain that the hands are pliable. David must have let him know that Arnold wanted to lead us in another meditation, so Rob stated that we could pick up where we left with this stuff. Even though he did not count the exercises, he stated there was nine of these different expressions. That's why he called them Nine Psalms. There are nine living reasons to get off our butts and go enjoy ourselves. He then gave the floor over to Arnold and Heidi for doing a meditation.
Life Force Meditation
This next meditation is a lying down meditation. We all laid in the same direction. This meditation is called the life force breathing meditation, which was done by one of Arnold Tayam's teachers, Jerry Alan Johnson. Arnold indicated that this meditation was always done in the beginning of the course that was taught. He then showed us the book that his instructor uses. It's a book that can only be acquired through taking the course on medical qi gong. When he mentioned the course, I knew I had to check it out. I later spoke to him and he gave me the website http://www.qigongmedicine.com. Arnold stated, "With this meditation all you need to do is sit back and relax and follow the visualization. It works with the five elements and the different tissues. Working with the organs, meridians, and what this also allows you to do is connect with your energy through using your posture, your breathing, and your visualization or mind intent. So just simply lay back and follow the meditation and feel."
This mediation was actually led via a tape. I will not transcribe it here, because there is too much to it. It is such that, this would not translate very well onto text, not unless you were to read the text out loud in a soft-spoken voice with music in the background. I do recommend checking out the website. They do have books, videos, and CD's available. If this meditation were available on CD, I would recommend getting it. I can state that afterward, we discussed what we experienced. It was quite powerful. What we did was stretch out our chi force until we became totally aware of everything around us, from the ceiling to the floor and beyond. I could really feel the life force throughout my body. I could even feel the pulsing of my blood through my face, my arms, my legs . . . etc. Part of the process of this meditation was that we would feel ourselves dissolve and become part of the white-light force, the life force. Then afterward, we rebuilt our bodies, concentrating on each organ. It was quite powerful and hard to describe. It is a VERY powerful meditation. You really become connected and aware of the life force that is present in all things. This meditation lasted a very long time. If you were to do it, you would have to make certain that you would not be interrupted. I tried to do this while I was typing this part, letting myself take a break from typing, but Barkley, my cat, would not allow me to fully relax into the meditation. He kept rubbing against me and wanting attention. Even so, I was able to do part of it and it was just as powerful as when I first did it at Omega. At Omega, after we did the meditation, Arnold let us all go at this point. He thought it was a good place to keep that atmosphere of calm and silence. To disturb it with questions and answers would not have been very good. So everyone broke for lunch at that point.
