Sacred Object of the Four Elements
Each element in this object has a meaning. As I was making it, I thought
of you (David Carradine).
Element One: Air
The feathers from various birds represent the element of Air. Birds have
always fascinated me with the way they can fly and the sounds of their song.
Without their song, there would be no music in the air.
Element Two: Earth
The horsehair comes from a friend who looks very much like your
daughter, Calista. Her horse recently died so she saved as much of his tail
as she could. She uses the hair from his tail in craft projects so she will
always remember him. I chose this element and placed it with the feathers
because the horse, swift and sure, is brother to the wind when he runs. To
see a running horse is magnificent, to ride one is glorious.
Element Three: Water
The sea has also fascinated me. Its power is beyond measure. They say
the sea is cold, but it contains the hottest blood of all (Whales Weep
Not-DH Lawrence). Each time I go down to the sea, I pick up a shell and hold
it to my ear. To here the roar of the ocean reminds me that we all once came
from the sea.
Element Four: Fire
The lava rock is the closest element that comes to fire. Formed in the
depths of molten rock, but light as air, it really contains four elements in
one. Air, Earth, Water, and Fire. Without Air, Fire cannot burn; Without
Fire, Earth cannot reform; Without Water, Fire cannot be quenched; Without
Earth, there is nothing to stand upon.
All these elements have been placed together with a woven band of many
colors. This band, though man-made, symbolizes our connection to all things.
